Fine Art Master Tools

Three-day Development Workshop

The "Fine Art Master Tools" workshop is a self-development, hands on, postproduction workshop that teaches photographers to master the most common tools that affect your image capture and your emotional range.

Fine art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism and commercial photography in as much as these applications provide visual support for stories, or create a visual stimulus for a product or service. Conversely, Fine Art Photography is often thematic and explores social issues, graphic dislocation, subliminal thought, duality, reality, surrealism, impressionism, and other motive forces. In its essence, Fine Art Photography is personal vision beyond documentation.

Students who attended the Vision beyond Record workshop will work with their images and explore methods to render their images as first envisioned.

In this three-day workshop, you will learn to use a Classical Painter's approach to separating hue, saturation, and luminosity into separate components that can drive your theme to its previously visualized conclusion or into new tonal and emotional ranges. We will learn how luminosity and contrast masks can control image tone and explore composites, an image method that can reveal a new and repurposed image. At the end of day three, students will have created 3-4 images around a solid conceptual framework and leave with image files that are ready for print and electronic display.

Topics include:

  • HSL tools, HSL layer applications
  • LAB applications
  • Masks for layers
  • Contour, contrast, and luminosity masks
  • Wacom Tablet applications

Preparation

One of the best ways to learn how to develop as a Fine Art Photographer is to explore great masterworks. Before the workshop, review Julia Margret Cameron, and Wolfgang Tillmans and Joan Charmant.

Richly Illustrated Workbook

There is more information in the workbook than we can cover in a few hours so you will find this a valuable resource long after you leave class.

Who Should Attend this Workshop?

Students should be an explorer of emotion and light and have an intermediate level of Photoshop skills. You must be familiar with and know how to operate your own digital SLR. We recommend that you complete the "Vision Beyond Record" module before enrolling in this workshop.
